The Genealogy of Dublin’s Native Middle-Class

The development of the urban native middle-class has been given scant attention in academic circles. We now know that an extensive Gaelic merchant and trader group began to emerge in Dublin after the death of Oliver Cromwell. It originated directly and indirectly from displaced leaders and professionals of Irish society during the collapse of the tribal system of the 18th century. The story is taken up in Irish Roots magazine (2016 Issue 3 No. 99; pp. 24-25).
